Alternators are Generators!
The easiest way to think of an alternator is to imagine a generator. Instead of wind, water, or a motor driving your alternator, there is what is called a serpentine belt that drives the main alternator pulley which is turned by your engine. The voltage produced is regulated by the internal voltage regulator to have an output of 13.4-14.6 volts as a general rule. Some variable output alternators generate as much as 24 volts. That being said, there are numerous functioning components of an alternator or generator. Some of the most important parts of generators are the pulley, pulley bearing, shaft, stator, rectifier, and the voltage regulator. Today's alternators have these vital components built into or incorporated into one single unit rather than having a separate voltage regulator like old model vehicles used to use with a belt driven generator.
Can a car still start with a bad alternator?
The answer is yes, as long as the battery has enough voltage to crank the engine.
Can I drive my car with a bad alternator?
Depending on why your alternator is not functioning, it may be dangerous to drive especially if there is a broken drive belt, or if the batteries voltage gets depleted below 12 volts. If the alternator is not functioning properly, it may only run off of the voltage left in the battery for a short time, usually about 30 minutes or less.
How do you test an alternator?
The easiest way to test an alternator is to look at the voltage output to the battery with a multimeter or battery tester; with the vehicle running, you should get a reading above 13.6 volts but below 15 volts if the alternator is generating the correct amount of voltage, excluding variable output alternators which can have a wide output range of 2-24 volts. If the voltage reading is higher than 14.9 volts, and it is not a variable output alternator, then the voltage output is too high and can damage the battery or other components. With over 20,000 components or more on the average vehicle, and most of them being operating by voltage, it is important to ensure that the voltage output on the alternator is correct.

Are You Short-Tripping Your Battery?
There is a possibility that nothing is wrong with your battery, or your car at all. An engine needs to run long enough for the alternator to recharge the battery from the voltage drain during the initial start of the engine. If an engine does not run long enough to recover the lost voltage in the battery from charging by the alternator, the battery will be depleted lower than the recommended voltage and amperage needed to start the engine; leaving you in need of a jumpstart as the battery is now too weak to turn the crank of the engine. This is called Short-Tripping. As an automobile mechanic I have came across this many times in retirees vehicles.
Just today I took a call from an elderly woman who had literally been to every leading shop in town, including the Jeep Dealer in Des Moines. Her complaint was comparable to what is known as a parasitic draw. She kept having a weak battery and in need of a jumpstart for her 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The dealer had replaced the battery multiple times, and other shops had too. She had 3 batteries installed in the last year alone by my competitors. The dealer finally installed a battery tender on her Jeep and now she had to plug it in every night. I agreed, this should not be happening period, especially if no parasitic draw has been discovered through multiple scans and analysis by many technicians.
Long story short, I am a Master Mechanic and I possess a wide array of knowledge and experience which helped me identify her problems over the phone, no kidding!
Solution-
None of the other shops asked her about her driving habits.
Fast T's we services customers at their location so we work for a lot of retirees. Some retirees have the habit of only driving 5 minutes away to the store, then driving home and parking for the week. This was her situation, and after explaining to her that she was Short-Tripping the battery, she now lets it run at least 20 minutes and has not had this problem since. 🤗
